Hoy presentamos a la Prof. Dra. Irma Russo.

IRMA RUSSO

On May 20, 2015 the Fox Chase Cancer Center Temple Health conferred posthumously the position of Full Professor to Irma H Russo. MD.

Dr. Irma H. Russo was born in San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina and earned her medical degree from the University National of Cuyo. In 1971, with her husband, Jose, she came to the United States where for the next forty-four years they would continue the work they had already begun. Irma was with Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC) in Philadelphia for twenty-two years; first as director of surgical and clinical pathology and then as director of the molecular endocrinology section of the Breast Cancer Research Laboratory, which she and Jose founded in 1973 and brought to FCCC in 1991 and on December 18, 2013 was named in her honor.

Irma was a pioneer in identifying the mechanisms of breast cancer prevention as mediated by pregnancy and worked towards developing a hormonal treatment for prevention of the disease using Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, and more recently, its replacement by a short amino acid peptide.

While she was courageously battling her own disease that was diagnosed in 2009 she was wary that her research plans will not be completed on time. She never made the time to self promotion and even to filling the promotion application that was overdue for more that 15 years. Her intellectual curiosity was contagious as witnessed by the numerous students and post docs she inspired.

Irma passed away on June 25, 2013 and this is the last photo of Irma with the members of the BCRL that she love and care so much. On May 20, 2015 she received posthumously the promotion to Full Professor at the FCCC-Temple Health.
